5 Books for self development

The Choice by Edith Eva Eger
The Choice by Edith Eva Eger

"The Choice: Embrace the Possible" is a memoir written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, a Holocaust survivor and renowned psychologist. It's one of the best self-development books I have read this year. , Dr. Eger shares her personal story of survival, resilience, and ultimately, her journey toward healing and self-discovery.

The book begins with Dr. Eger recounting her early years growing up in a small town in Hungary, leading a happy and carefree life until the Nazi regime's rise to power. She vividly describes her family's deportation to Auschwitz, where she and her sister were separated from their parents and faced unimaginable horrors. Through her harrowing experiences in the concentration camp, Dr. Eger delves into the depths of human suffering, resilience, and the power of choice.

After the war, Dr. Eger struggled to cope with her trauma and the loss of her family. Determined to rebuild her life, she moved to the United States, married, and became a mother. However, she carried the weight of her past with her, grappling with survivor's guilt, PTSD, and survivor's syndrome.

"The Choice" not only explores Dr. Eger's personal journey but also delves into her professional path as a psychologist, specializing in trauma recovery.

Drawing on her own experiences and her extensive work with patients, she offers valuable insights into the human mind's capacity for healing and transformation.

Throughout the book, Dr. Eger emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for one's life and embracing the power of choice. She shares her therapeutic approach, emphasizing self-compassion, forgiveness, and the ability to let go of past traumas.

Dr. Eger encourages readers to confront their own inner demons, embrace vulnerability, and find the strength to create a meaningful and fulfilling life.

"The Choice: Embrace the Possible" is a deeply moving and uplifting memoir that not only sheds light on the atrocities of the Holocaust but also serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Dr. Eger's story serves as a reminder that despite the darkest of circumstances, we all have the power to choose hope, love, and forgiveness.

Someday is today by Matthew Dicks

Section wise summary

The author provides 22 steps to improve one's self... In all the book is divided into 4 parts - Time, Taking a leap, Support & Living the life

1) Time - This part showcases the importance of time in one's life. The author's key message is to think in minutes and not days as we are used to. Even in 10mins, a lot can be achieved if one is focused and attentive. .

2) Taking the leap - This was the best and eye-opener section for me The author tells readers to be ready and yes to every opportunity. As per him, saying no lets you go nowhere whereas saying yes moves you ahead.

3) Support - The section revolves around getting key support from key people. Like puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together, these key individuals become the backbone of your journey, offering guidance and encouragement.

4) Living the life - He tells the importance of being creative and optimistic in life. As the vibrant narrator of your own story, you paint your canvas with strokes of creativity and splash it with hues of boundless optimism.

What I liked -

>The story of the author is very inspiring and full of setbacks and failure, The way to overcome it and achieved success was something I loved reading.

>The book is perfectly organized, with each chapter telling you exactly what to expect, so you can go back and savor what resonates with you.

.

What I disliked

> Few of the controversial pieces of advice given by the author like "Breaking the rules" & "Saying yes to every opportunity" is something I don't agree with since long-term consequences might not be good...

Discipline is Destiny by Ryan Holiday

Discipline is Destiny" is a book written by Ryan Holiday. It's a 300 pages book divided into 3 parts - The Body, The Temperament, and The Soul. There are over 55 subchapters in the entire book.

"𝑾𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕. 𝑾𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕"

The essence of the book is captured in its title - 'Discipline is Destiny.' For many people, these two words are opposite as discipline is perceived as requiring continuous effort, while destiny is seen as sudden. However, the author argues that disciplined people are fortunate.

I hardly purchase books based on their cover or title, However, this was one of the rare books I brought based on its title and not anything else. The book fulfills in motivating its readers and giving perfect self-help vibes.

Ryan emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for your own life and developing the discipline to achieve your goals. He encourages readers to embrace challenges and view setbacks as growth opportunities. Overall, "Disciple is Destiny" is a theoretical guide for anyone looking to achieve success in life through the power of discipline.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗱

> The book is engaging, and the stories are inspiring and unique. It will give you a kick to get up and make things better.

>There are plenty of chapters on different topics like "Getting up early" to "Quite being a slave of one's habit". The author has put stories of famous personalities to prove their points

> Its one self-help book which everyone should read at least once.

Built Don't Talk by Raj Shamani

"The best way to predict your future is to create it"

It's a short memoir cum self development and self help advice given by

Raj Shamani.

To those who are not aware of it, he is a digital marketer and entrepreneur who regularly gives marketing plus life tips on his social media.

The book starts with his childhood, hailing from a middle-class family and with an average IQ he faced lots of difficulties & problems but what was certain was his passion for business. He started an FMCG business in 2014, which became a big hit and helped him advance.

Raj questioned the current education system and its ineffective to teach students fundamental skills like critical thinking & ability to question. He goes on to explain the fundamental of marketing, business, and how one can create a personal brand. You'll learn how he overcame obstacles and turned his passion into a successful business.

What I liked !!

I was attracted to the book by its title, which resonated with me. We often keep talking, planning & researching and things stop there. We don't go and do it even if we start it, we quickly lose interest or stop doing it after a failure. This book was a big reminder in that part, the author motivates the reader to take action, even if you look stupid or afraid of failing.

Overall, it is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in entrepreneurship or seeking self-help advice & inspiration to pursue their passions.

While it has its limitations, the book's personal anecdotes and motivational messages make it a good read.
